How bait affects fishing
The official store page recommends experimenting with different baits. In GamingTrend's PAX East preview, fish had preferred baits that made them easier to catch. That supports matching bait to the target, but it does not establish that every fish will refuse all other bait.
The July 2026 demo release-date trailer shows a SELECT TACKLE screen with bait and rod in separate slots — Sturdy Earcrawler with the Simple Rod in that shot. Check what is equipped before casting. Species-by-species bait preferences and bite odds are not published, so test them on the water. The fishing guide covers the casting and reeling controls.
What the sources actually establish
| Bait or lure | Evidence | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Earthworm | Demo walkthrough | Reported to work for the first contract to catch five Snappers near the trading post. |
| Wound bait | PAX East hands-on preview | Crafted after a skill-tree unlock in that preview; described as attracting small, peaceful fish. |
| Specialised bait | Official store description | Resources gathered in the world can be used to craft it; the store page does not list all recipes. |
| Lures made with fish organs | Official store description | Fish can be dissected for organs and body parts used to craft lures and gear. |
The PAX preview and the later demo are different builds, so do not assume their starting items and unlocks match exactly. A full bait list and the exact recipes are not established by these sources. Official material uses both bait and lures, but the distinction between them has not been clearly specified.
Trailer footage adds names without explaining them. A bait panel in the DREADMOOR IGN Fan Fest trailer, published on Digital Vortex Entertainment's YouTube channel, lists five entries — Wound Tin, Deadly Tick, Burning Belly, Rainbow Fin and Sturdy Earcrawler. The Rainbow Fin text describes bait for predatory fish that imitates a small fish and is said to attract a specific type of fish. The footage does not establish how the other four perform or whether five is the complete roster. Note the naming difference: the trailer says Wound Tin, while the PAX preview called the unlock wound bait; whether they are the same item is unconfirmed.
Turning a catch into bait
GamingTrend describes a PAX preview in which the player took unwanted fish to a grinder for bait material. The player then used two starting torn pages to unlock wound bait in a skill tree and crafted it at a workbench with the required ingredients. Pages were also found while exploring. This is a useful example of the progression loop, not a promise that every build has identical starting supplies.
The developer's fishing diary says fish can be processed into materials used to unlock tools, bait and upgrades. The official store page also describes crafting specialised bait from gathered resources and harvesting fish organs for lures. Exact conversion rates, recipe quantities and relative sale values still need verification.
A practical approach is to check a fish's current use before selling or processing it: contract catches may be needed for an objective, while other fish can be kept for crafting. The fish list collects known species; the tips page includes a broader trip checklist.
Reading the water and the HUD
Official screenshots and the July 2026 trailer show the elements worth checking while fishing:
- Disturbed water is the visual cue a preview used to choose a spot.
- Bait and rod are separate slots in the SELECT TACKLE screen.
- Distance appears beside the float: 8 m in one official screenshot, and 12 m, 7 m and 14 m in the trailer.
- Bait count sits next to the bait icon (shown as 1 in the official screenshot). Whether it falls on every cast, only on a bite or only when a fish is landed has not been verified.
- Quest tags can name the target, such as PREDATORY FISH — Catch Harpooner 0/3.
A practical routine: choose a target, confirm bait and rod, cast toward disturbed water, then watch line tension. If a fish escapes, review reeling and tension first, then consider whether a different bait is worth trying.
Planning a bait supply
Check your bait before leaving and carry a reserve suited to the targets you intend to pursue. If you unlock additional recipes, compare their ingredients and descriptions at the workbench before spending scarce materials.
Some rare fish appear only under particular conditions or at particular times, according to the developers. No specific night-only fish or exact bait requirement is established by that statement. The developers also describe nighttime as more dangerous, so prepare your boat before fishing after dark.
What still needs testing
The useful questions are specific enough to answer in-game without guessing:
- Bait consumption. Test a cast with no bite, a missed hook and a broken line. Compare the count before and after each.
- Preferred versus possible. At one spot, compare a bait described as preferred for the target with another bait. Record whether a bite occurs, not just whether the preferred bait feels faster.
- Recipe economics. Compare the ingredients a recipe asks for with what the same fish or materials would fetch at the trader.
Those observations are more reliable than a universal "best bait" list, especially while the build is still changing.
